Sliders: Earth 214

MAGGIE
So, in closing, we announce that we will take no part in the Slidology movement, and we suggest that all of you do the same. Following Claire LaBeau's movement isn't what you want. Now, we will open the floor to questions.

Maggie, Mallory, and Diana were sitting at a podium, conducting a press conference.

REPORTER
Yes, Ms. Beckett. What happened to Rembrandt Brown?

The three sliders looked around at each other. None of them had an answer.

Back at their hotel room, the sliders had the same subject on their minds.

MALLORY
What are we going to do? Its been a week, and there's been no sign of Rembrandt...

DIANA
I know. I hate to say this, but... maybe the Seer was right, and Remmy is, well, gone.

MAGGIE
Give him time guys. He has to get over the slide from that Kromagg junkpile, dust himself off, fight about a million Maggs, and slide back here. That's not exactly your one-week job.

DIANA
That's what I'm saying. We have to leave. This place creeps me out.

MALLORY
I agree. What do we do?

Diana picked up the journal she was writing with the information on the timer, as well as her PDL. She explained to Mallory her plan to build another timer. Maggie looked out the window at the sky.

MAGGIE (whispering)
Where are you, Remmy?

The vortex opened, and all four sliders came out. They were screaming, happily. Their last world was a huge party world. They'd enjoyed a five-day Mardi Gras celebration, and Quinn, Wade, and Rembrandt partied the whole slide. Arturo stayed at the hotel, working on the timer. He was the only quiet one, now.

WADE
That was amazing! I love sliding!

REMBRANDT
Yeah, the lifestyle does have its moments!

Quinn and Arturo looked around.

ARTURO
This world is unnaturally quiet. What do you think, Kromaggs?

QUINN
I hope not.

Wade and Remmy continued to laugh and banter back and forth. They were bonding.

Down the street, a couple of dogs began to bark. A man opened his window and yelled at the sliders.

MAN
Would you pipe down for crying out loud! Its 3 pm! People are trying to sleep!

Wade and Remmy quickly turned quiet as the man closed the window. The sliders looked at each other, wondering what had just occurred. It was the middle of the afternoon!

They walked quietly to the hotel, because there were no cabs. That was strange, for this time of day. Finally they reached the lobby desk, where a man was half-asleep in his seat.

REMBRANDT
Yo, buddy, wake up!

MAN
Yeah, yeah, what do you want?

ARTURO
Yes, we would like a room for the night.

MAN
Just for the night?

WADE
Yeah, what's wrong with that.

MAN
Well, we charge by the day here, like everywhere else.

Quinn agreed and they paid for the suite.

MAN
What are you all doing out so late?

The sliders looked outside. It seemed light to them. Why was everyone acting so strange about the time? Quinn caught on fast.

QUINN
Yeah, we just got here from New York. You know, on the late flight. It was the only one we could get on.

MAN
You know what, I'll give you the room for the rest of the night free. That's only fair because of the late time. I can't make you pay for a couple hours of sleep. How long you planning on staying?

ARTURO
Two days. Thank you.

Wade tried to fit in as well.

WADE
And nights.

The man at the desk smiled. What a weird bunch of people! He looked at their eyes. They were brighter than most. Not as green. He shrugged it off and went back to sleep.

Up in their room, the sliders talked about it.

ARTURO
This world is odd. It seems to me that the occupants of this world sleep during the day, and live and work during the night. Like...

WADE
RATS!

ARTURO
Well, I would have said mice, but yes. It seems to me that the humans, and most likely all mammals on this world developed into nocturnal beings. So, we will have to fit in, while Quinn and I continue work on the timer.

QUINN
I don't think so, Professor. You did enough on the last world. It's time for you to get some rest.

Arturo was tired, so he couldn't disagree with Quinn. But before he got some rest, there was something he wanted to do.

Quinn went into his bedroom, grabbed a laptop, inserted the disk with the data, and went to work.

Wade decided to explore this world. She wasn't done having fun. Before Rembrandt could go with her, Arturo grabbed him.

ARTURO
Mr. Brown, I have something to ask of you. What happened while I was gone? What happened to Wade? How did you all work out without me? What happened to my double? I need to know everything.

REMBRANDT
Are you sure, man? I mean, I've told you about everything. I guess I could go into more detail, if you wanted.

ARTURO
Yes, Mr. Brown.

REMBRANDT
Well, that double of yours, he was sure convincing. He had all of us convinced he was you.

Arturo had to laugh. Last time he saw his double, he didn't seem too much like him.

REMBRANDT
We had a bunch of really interesting slides. Quinn met the female version of himself... even got to meet himself as a ten-year-old. It's the funniest story, your double was having a blast, and we never....

ARTURO
What is it, Mr. Brown?

REMBRANDT
It was his illness. Your double had a terminal illness, and he must have been trying to make the most of his time because of that. I got so mad because he didn't tell me. Then, we landed on my friend, Maggie's, world. There was this guy, Rickman, and he killed your double, just as you helped save his world. Rickman had sliding technology, and we followed him to get the coordinates to our "home world". I guess it wasn't ours, though.

Arturo laughed. He had missed a lot.

REMBRANDT
We got to what I thought was home, and I was captured by the Kromaggs with Wade, while Quinn slid with Maggie. It was Hell, man. Every second of it. They took Wade from me, and took her to some Maggot breeding camp, and the next time I saw her, she was some machine. I think she's all right, though. She's a tough little girl.

Arturo was touched. He missed Wade, and her innocent charm.

REMBRANDT
Quinn and Maggie came and saved me. We slid for a while, and finally met Quinn's brother, Colin.

ARTURO
Brother?

REMBRANDT
Yes, his brother. Quinn, supposedly, came from another Earth, but I don't know what to believe anymore. We kept sliding, trying to find Quinn's homeworld, until Colin became unstuck, and Quinn was merged with Mallory.

ARTURO
Unstuck?

REMBRANDT
Oh no, man, I won't get into that again.

Wade was walking around town. It was getting dark, so life began to flourish. She was amazed. There wasn't much light, but the people could see perfectly. She thought of their eyes like cat's eyes, able to see in the dark. The man at the desk had eyes that reminded her of her cat back on her Earth. She walked along, but was seen by a man.

MAN
Wade?

WADE
Yes, who are you?

MAN
It's me, Wade, Tom Davidson. I'm Ryan's friend.

WADE
Ryan?

TOM
Ryan! Your husband!

Wade thought to herself. Husband?! Ryan?! She'd dated a Ryan in high school, but they'd certainly never married. What was his last name? Simms! Ryan Simms! Could she have wed him on this world?

TOM
I thought that you were in Seattle?

WADE
Seattle? Why would I be in Seattle?

TOM
That's where your company is located. Your multi-million-dollar computer company. Are you all right?

WADE
Yeah, I'm fine.

Wade was bewildered. Her double had everything she wanted. She had always loved computers, she was rich, she had a husband. But Ryan? She thought that she would have married Quinn. She had liked Quinn for a while, but Quinn always thought of her as a friend. She thought that her sliding adventure would have sparked their love, but Quinn was always working on the timer. Maybe sliding again was a last-ditch effort to do the same.

REMBRANDT
It was so funny! Maggie was this space hero, and Mallory kept selling her things for money. He was running this weird Maggie souvenir shop. That Mallory was a weird one. Diana liked him a lot. Oh Diana, we wouldn't have gone far without her. She saved our butts about a million times. She wanted to split Mallory, but never got it done. Man! We have to hurry, Professor! I bet she will build her own timer sooner or later, and then Q-Ball will be lost.

Arturo loved these stories. He missed sliding as much as Wade had. While he was alone on Quinn's world, he had tried to find himself. He found that sliding was the greatest adventure possible, and even the vicarious thrill of the stories brought him joy.

The next day, Arturo looked at the timer. 25 hours. Wade had come home late, and she felt she had to go out again today. Although it was the afternoon, this world's "nightlife" was roaring.

Wade was searching the bars on this world. Something about this world intrigued her. It was although she belonged here. She went to the library to look up "her" company, "her" life, and Ryan. It was a very interesting confrontation when she had to explain to the librarian why she was there so early. She gave "the early bird catches the worm" cliché, but the librarian didn't quite understand the meaning of her quote.

Back at the hotel, Remmy talked to Quinn about Wade.

QUINN
She was always a loner when we slid. It was like she was repelled by us. I have to admit, when you tell me about the close nature of your sliders, I am amazed. We were never close. I guess that's why we got home so soon. All we were concerned of was getting home, but I would have liked to experience that close nucleus you had. Just travelling with you all now has changed my whole idea of sliding.

Arturo and Rembrandt looked at each other. Although they hadn't gone home as a group, their friendships had been created, and they were equally devoted to getting home.

With 20 hours until the slide, Quinn came rushing out of his room.

QUINN
I've found it! I've got the answer!

ARTURO
Good heavens!

REMBRANDT
So we can leave now?

Quinn was so excited that he didn't hear Rembrandt's question. He just kept on explaining his discovery.

QUINN
I've managed to allow us to open the gateway 6 hours after we arrive without resetting the timer. It seems like that's the best we can do. Now, the timer will always read 48 hours when we arrive, and if we surpass the 2 day limit, we will be stuck, but we can open the gateway at any time between 6 and 48 hours!"

REMBRANDT
So we can leave now?

QUINN
"Yeah! Is Wade back?"

Rembrandt shook his head. She hadn't come back.

Wade was looking at the computer. It was amazing to her. Her life was so different. She had written the most popular operating system on this world. She was rich.

Soon, people began to trickle into the library. She realized how weird it would seem for her to be looking herself up, so she finally pulled herself away, and walked back to the hotel.

When Wade came back, Quinn told her of the news, and quickly opened the gateway, and the four jumped in. Wade was the last one. She took a last look around at this world. She wanted to stay, but felt strangely out of place, now. She jumped in, and the vortex closed.
