Today, I had the great pleasure of watching 'Paradise Lost' in full for the first time. For years I had intentionally avoided it; how foolish I was. For clearly, 'Paradise Lost' is the greatest Sliders episode of all time. Let's observe its finer points:1. Tremendous concept. Rarely has the "infinite possibilities" ever been taken to such a creative extent. Mutated earthworms that feed on the living and secrete a "pudding of youth" is a far better example of the plotlines we want than, oh say, "Double Cross."
2. Laurie. What a fine actress! It's obvious she's studied the Shakespearean method extensively and is far more than just a pretty face. Had Kari Wuhrer not been available, this woman would have made a fine Maggie Beckett.
3. The death scene of Sheriff Burke. I was riveted to my seat from such a realistic representation of a man being devoured by an earthworm. Just writing about it makes me shudder.
4. Exceptionally witty dialogue. Quinn was ON this episode. My favorite line? Quinn tells Bud "I hear you, I'm just not listening." Then he decks him. I tell you, I laughed extremely hard after that scene.
5. Speaking of Bud, is he not the greatest one time appearance in Sliders history? I mean Daelin Richards and Logan St. Clair were OK, but Bud was something else. His on screen chemistry with Jerry was apparent. I only wish they'd have made him a recurring character.
6. Action hero Quinn. I remember a time ("Eggheads") where a single punch would knock Quinn down. But it's clear that Sliding has made him tough. Quinn kicks ass in this episode! I wish I were nearly as cool as Quinn. Then I'd get the girl, beat up the bad guys, and blow up caves. Heck, I'd be Batman!
7. Arturo's 'death' scene. A tremendous performance by JRD. The way he grunts and cries out "Confound you!" as he's pulled under... I was deeply moved. It almost made me sad they killed him off in the next episode, but c'mon, then we'd have missed out on Maggie. Rrrooowrrr!
8. Suspended animation. Brilliant! It also shows how smart the writers are. I mean, mutated snakes would have to wait a week to eat their next victim, right? It makes sense earthworms would too! And suspended animation keeps the victims fresh in a zip-locked pouch.
9. Comprehensive alt-history. They really went out of their way to provide dates. Such as, we know the sacrifices have been going on for 54 years. We also know that 1949 (48 years ago) is the turning point from a classic line of dialogue by Arturo. And we also know that that 20-year old waiter was actually 103. Way to go to the extra mile, Steve Stoliar! You are so much a better writer than that Tracy Tormé chick.
10. And finally...The love triangle between Parker, Trudy, and Wade. It's too bad this show is rated PG, if ya know what I mean. (Wink. Wink.)
All in all, I give this episode a 10 out of 10. I also watched this really crappy episode called "As Time Goes By" right after it, but there were just so many plotholes and problems with continuity, I just couldn't begin to review it.
I really hope they play Exodus in the next marathon. And maybe the Breeder again!
