Gate Haven - Hall of Obscurity - Assorted Tidbits - Star Trek References

As posted by Callie21V (2/20/04)

The third season of Sliders wasn't content to settle for ripping off movies... it also had a noticeable fetish for classic Star Trek. Check out this side-by-side comparison:

"What Are Little Girls Made of?" vs. "State of the ART"

"What Are Little Girls Made of?": An evil scientist tries to transfer Kirk's mind into an android, but Kirk throws a wrench into the works by focusing on an irrational hatred of Spock during the duplication process.

"State of the ART": An evil scientist tries to transfer Quinn's mind into an android, but Quinn throws a wrench into the works by stimulating too many areas of his brain during the duplication process.

"Spectre of the Gun" vs. "The Dream Masters"

"Spectre of the Gun": Because of the crew's unshakable belief that everything around them is an illusion, a hail of bullets fired at them passes harmlessly through their bodies.

"The Dream Masters": Because of the Sliders' unshakable belief that everything around them is an illusion, a hail of knives flung at them passes harmlessly through their bodies.

Not only the content of this scene, but even the camera angle and eerie flashes of light are identical. What's more, writer Melinda Snodgrass has deep roots in Trek, with five TNG episodes and a TOS novel to her credit. She definitely would have been familiar with "Spectre" when she wrote "The Dream Masters."

 "The Cage" vs. "Dragonslide"

"The Cage": A woman who was horribly scarred in an accident is granted the illusion of perpetual beauty in exchange for her co-operation.

"Dragonslide": A woman who was horribly scarred in an accident is granted the illusion of perpetual beauty in exchange for her co-operation.

"The Cloud Minders" vs. "Season's Greedings"

"The Cloud Minders": The rich elite live in a city on a cloud, while the masses toil in hardship on the surface below.

"Season's Greedings": The rich elite live in a city on a cloud, while the masses toil in hardship on the surface below. Meanwhile, Quinn, Wade and Rembrandt walk around in Spock ears.

 "Operation: Annihilate!" vs. "The Breeder"

"Operation: Annihilate!": Flying pancake-like blobs attach themselves to victims' flesh and inject a parasitic form of themselves, which compels the host to carry out its wishes.

"The Breeder": Flying pancake-like blobs attach themselves to victims' mouths and insert a parasitic form of themselves, which compels the host to get slutty and naked.

 "Arena" vs. "The Guardian"

"Arena": Kirk builds a primitive cannon to defeat the Gorn against whom he has been pitted in single combat.

"The Guardian": Quinn helps his double build a primitive cannon to defeat the Gorn who's been beating him up at recess.
