Gate Haven - Hall of Obscurity - Assorted Tidbits - Sliders Font Sightings

The official Sliders font is Vienna Extended, created by Dutch graphic designer Anthony de Meester in 1989. It isn't available for download, but you can purchase a copy here.

The vast majority of fan sites, however, use the free alternative: Interdimensional by Jim Pingle.

And occasionally, both fonts pop up in other contexts altogether...

 "The Free Lunch"

The Free LunchOn 6/1/02, LauraSandborne posted word of this science-fiction novel with Vienna Extended on its cover. David Peckinpah was heard to complain, "The Free Lunch is easily the crappiest cookbook I've read since George Carlin's Napalm and Silly Putty."

This surreal online comic uses Interdimensional as its signature font.

That's 13-point Interdimensional (except for the custom-stretched S). Someone at the U of A must be a Sliders fan...

 Byblos Hair Salon

Byblos Hair SalonThis Vienna Extended-based logo popped up right here in Ottawa. Unfortunately, they only trim tufts under two feet long. 7:-#

 Pure Soul

Pure SoulFor this sighting, on the other hand, I had to visit the most distant, exotic locale of my life... the 99-cent remainder bin of an outlet store (in New York!) It was the side of the cassette version that caught my eye - the white-on-black VE lettering makes it easy to picture the tape as some sort of Sliders tie-in.

The R&B quartet's self-titled 1995 debut was the only full album they released.

Immediately followed by another VE sighting in Ottawa! I'm on a roll! Well, if you define "on a roll" as "seeing a bunch of ads and signage that bear a font that was once used on Sliders," which I do.

Real Beauty for Real Girls

And once again, we find Vienna Extended associated with hair care... namely, the Mary-Kate and Ashley line of junior styling products. For what it's worth, the buyer consensus seems to be that they're the shoddiest pieces of crap this side of the Krusty Home Pregnancy Test.

 The Elsa Awards

This one is my favourite so far. The Elsas are the Czech equivalent of the Emmys... and for some reason, they made Interdimensional their official font. (It's 100% guaranteed not Vienna: I even verified that the logo on their website is 41-point Interdimensional, with tracking of 10 and -420 on certain letters to adjust the spacing.)

Really, who thought a fan-made Sliders font would ever make it onto an awards show in the Czech Republic?

 Nine Princes in Amber

This comic book adaptation of Roger Zelazny's novels used Vienna Extended on the covers of all nine issues.

 The Adventures of Mia

Adventures of MiaAnd another comic sighting sent in by TemporalFlux: Enrico Casarosa's independent comic book makes extensive use of Interdimensional in its cover designs and site graphics.
