Sliders: Earth 214

6.8 | Reunion, Part II

RB
Did they make it?

The vortex opened, casting the only light in a bare, grey-walled room. The four sliders tumbled out, and a moment later were left in pitch black.

WADE
What is this, dark world?

Quinn groped his way to the light switch. He tried to flip it, but it didn't return the power.

QUINN
No, just "don't pay our electricity bill" world...

The sliders found a door, and emerged to the outside. Remmy smelled the air and looked around.

REMBRANDT
Yep, I know I've been here before!

Rembrandt wasn't really sure, but it made everyone feel better.

ARTURO
Where would Quinn be, Mr. Brown?

REMBRANDT
I would guess he'd be at the hotel.

The sliders set out to find the Chandler.

DIANA
Maggie! We have to leave. There's nothing for us here.

Maggie looked out the window, half-expecting to see Remmy come running up the street at any moment.

MALLORY
Maggie, we've done everything we can do here. If Remmy comes, he'll know we left.

MAGGIE
Yeah, but there isn't any way for us to find him! Or for him to find us!

Diana looked at Mallory, and then at Maggie. She had no answers for either of them. Even she was skeptical. She looked at the timer she had created. It was counting down. This was her doing, so that she would know she had to leave. The time made no difference though; all of that was for her. She didn't want to leave Remmy, but she wanted to go home.

REMBRANDT
Here we are.

The sliders entered the hotel, and Rembrandt led them to door 214. It was the same room. It was always the same room.

Rembrandt knocked on the door.

The sliders inside the room looked around. They'd had enough conflict on this world. Diana motioned to open the gateway.

REMBRANDT
Room service.

As Diana moved to open the vortex, Maggie stopped her.

MAGGIE
Stop! Remmy?

REMBRANDT
Excuse me, Ma'am?

Remmy was having fun with this. He had no idea that he'd caught his friends on the verge of leaving.

ARTURO
Enough of this nonsense, Mr. Brown.

Arturo knocked on the door.

ARTURO
I believe we have a friend of yours here...

Arturo, of course, had never met any of the other sliders. Maggie recognized the voice, though, from her encounter with his double.

MAGGIE
Professor Arturo?

Arturo looked at Rembrandt. Rembrandt nodded.

ARTURO
Yes, it is I.

Maggie had gone over this event a million times. Was this time for real? She opened the door. There stood Remmy and the Professor.

MAGGIE
Remmy!

Maggie and Remmy embraced. Maggie had a question.

MAGGIE
Isn't he supposed to be dead?

REMBRANDT
Long story!

Then, Quinn and Wade walked in.

MAGGIE
Quinn? Wade?

Quinn didn't really have a part in this reunion. He tried to keep quiet.

QUINN
I'm a double, so is she.

Wade was more interested. She shook Maggie's hand and smiled. On the other side of the room, Rembrandt got reacquainted with his friends.

REMBRANDT
Diana, Mallory. Good to see you. I missed you both!

MALLORY
Right back at you!

Diana put down the timer, thankful she didn't use it. Then, she got up and hugged Remmy.

REMBRANDT
Guys, I've got big news. We've found a way to split Mallory.

Diana looked skeptical. They'd been through this before.

DIANA
Remmy...

ARTURO
Mr. Brown is correct. The procedure is quite flawless.

DIANA
Even after the long-term merge?

Arturo nodded. Diana was impressed.

DIANA
Well, let's get started.

Remmy continued to talk with Maggie and Mallory, while Arturo, Quinn, and Diana sat down to work.

MAGGIE
I missed you, Rem.

REMBRANDT
Oh girl, I missed you too.

MAGGIE
Now, explain what happened...

REMBRANDT
I landed on what I thought was home, but nobody was around. Then, I ran into Q-Ball, and he introduced me to the Professor.

MAGGIE
And he's your Arturo?

REMBRANDT
Yeah, we, um, accidentally left him on a world and brought his double.

MAGGIE
Well, I know how that feels.

Maggie smiled; this was all like a wonderful dream.

REMBRANDT
I told Quinn about our situation, and he took us along.

MAGGIE
Now, you said that it wasn't "your world"?

REMBRANDT
I can't explain that, but the world we landed on after Rickman died wasn't Earth Prime.

MAGGIE
What about Quinn's parents?

Rembrandt shrugged. More questions.

Quinn, Diana, and Arturo were debating how to handle the separation.

ARTURO
So, the next slide, we will return to Quinn's earth and use his equipment to split the Quinns.

DIANA
Sounds great!

Diana's timer, on the table, caught Quinn's eye. Another idea sprang to mind -- one that was technically riskier; but he couldn't see it failing.

QUINN
Maybe there's another way...

ARTURO
How do you mean, Quinn?

QUINN
Well, we could re-configure the timer to run in concert with Dr. Davis's. The combination of the two timers should create the same effect as the equipment back home.

Arturo hesitated, knowing that there was risk involved. He almost objected, but had faith in Quinn's suggestion. Diana looked at Arturo, and he gave a silent acceptance to the plan.

DIANA
Great. What do you need me to do?

Quinn smiled. This would work. It was a lot less precise, but yes, it would work.

Mallory looked on as Quinn put the finishing touches on the timer. Remmy was still explaining his most recent adventures, and Maggie explained how much she missed his company.

A few hours later, Quinn and Arturo were finished.

QUINN
Now, so as not to reset the timer, we will wait until the six-hour limit to open the vortex. Also, the power supply is going to be handled by Diana's timer, just in case ours isn't strong enough.

DIANA
Are you ready, Mallory?

MALLORY
Can't wait.

Mallory was ready. He had faith in Arturo and Quinn. How could he not trust himself?

When the 6-hour barrier approached, Quinn was still messing with the timer.

MALLORY
Are we going to do this or not?

Mallory was beginning to get nervous. He didn't want to wait any longer.

QUINN
Just a few more seconds.

Quinn opened the vortex. The vortex was an ugly yellow color. The merged timer caused the color change. Quinn tossed the timer to Mallory. He hesitated, but continued, jumping into the vortex. It closed, and the others were left to wait.

QUINN
If this works, two vortices will open on here in a minute.

MAGGIE
How does this work? I mean, I understand that the vortex splits in two, but how can that separate the Quinns?

QUINN
It's a bit complicated. You see, the mixing of the timers allows the vortices to reopen on the same place they left. The signals cancel each other out.

REMBRANDT
Now, Q-Ball. You said that it may not work. What could happen?

QUINN
One timer's signal could override the other's, and Mallory could land on another earth. He has the return coordinates, so if that happens, he will be back in 6 hours.

Diana was worried. She didn't like this waiting. But her attention turned when two vortices appeared. In quick succession, each spit out a slider. Everyone mentally picked a Quinn, and raced towards him. The Quinn picked himself up.

QUINN-1
Oh... what a rush.

The speaker's face belonged to Mallory. They looked to the other, but turned back when they heard Quinn's first words.

QUINN-1
Wade?

REMBRANDT
Q-Ball, is it you?

QUINN-1
Remmy, Professor! Its me, Quinn!

Diana smiled, but her attention turned to Mallory, who lay still on the floor.

DIANA
Mallory?

He moved his head, but couldn't move his body. Mallory was hurt, and he was dying.

DIANA
Mallory's hurt! When can we leave?

QUINN
Our timer has to reset, but you can leave with yours.

DIANA
Okay, we're going!

REMBRANDT
Diana, how can we find you?

ARTURO
Rembrandt, we can track her wormhole. We will reunite with her in 6 hours.

Diana picked up her timer, severing it from Quinn's. Quinn almost screamed at her, thinking she broke both, but on closer examination, his timer was all right.

Diana opened the vortex and pulled Mallory inside. The vortex closed afterwards.

Arturo looked at Maggie.

ARTURO
Why did she want to leave? What's wrong with medical care on this world?

MAGGIE
It's not in the best of shape. Once, Mallory wanted an antacid and it would have meant a two-day wait. I'm sure they could have gotten him in by the time we leave, though.

WADE
But if they can't find good medical help on the next world, what will they do?

Nobody knew the answer.

Diana was inside a hospital room. She was sitting by Mallory's bed, crying. Mallory was weak, and near death.

MALLORY
There's no hope, is there?

DIANA (crying)
You'll be all right, Mallory.

MALLORY
Don't lie. I have to tell you something.

DIANA
What is it?

MALLORY (whispering)
I love you.

Mallory closed his eyes as Diana grabbed his hand. She cried, knowing he was dead.

DIANA
I love you too.

Six hours later, Wade, Quinn, EP Quinn, Arturo, Maggie, and Rembrandt emerged from the vortex. They hurried to the nearest hospital, knowing Diana would be there.

They found her, sitting in the waiting room, crying. The sliders knew what had happened. It hit Quinn hard. This was his fault. His haste had killed Mallory. He hated this. Most of all, he hated the side of himself that was glad that he was going home, ignoring Mallory's death.

REMBRANDT
Diana, I'm sorry.

DIANA
He was so kind. He just wanted to live a normal life.

Diana tried to stop her crying. She stood up.

DIANA
Can I go home now?

Rembrandt nodded. Diana looked up, and then looked as if she realized something.

DIANA
He was right.

Rembrandt looked puzzled.

REMBRANDT
Who was right?

DIANA
Geiger. He was right....

Rembrandt looked at Diana, and then to his friends. She was right. Geiger was telling the truth.
