Sliders: Earth 214

6.7 | Reunion, Part I

Still on the Seer's world, Diana, Maggie, and Mallory were debating what to do next.

MAGGIE
I still think that we should stay.

DIANA
I miss Remmy too, but there's no reason we should wait forever. I've taken some pieces from the Kromagg equipment, and I'm almost done with my own timer. The good thing about taking the timer apart so many times is that I've learned to rebuild it in a snap.

MALLORY
So when can we leave?

DIANA
In the next couple of days.

Maggie wanted to wait, but she was tired of this world. She was tired of fighting Mallory and Diana. Remmy would come. She knew he would.

The sliders were relaxing on a plane, on their way to Los Angeles. Remmy's double was extremely wealthy on this world, so they felt it would be a good change of pace to ride in style.

Quinn looked down at the timer, as he went over the situation again and again in his head. This had to work. There was no other way around it. Remmy's friends were in LA, so if they wanted to find them, that's where they'd have to go. The sliding radius would simply shift. That's all there was to it.

The plane landed safely at LAX Airport, and the sliders stepped off the plane, admiring the scene.

ARTURO
Well, Mr. Brown. I hope your plan works. I despise this town.

Rembrandt laughed. So did the other professor.

QUINN
Now, according to our strongest theory, we'll have to wait the whole 2 days until the slide.

WADE
This has been bothering me. Why is there a limit? I have been holding this off for a while, hoping that you would talk about it, but you never do. Why do we have to wait?

Quinn motioned to answer the question, but Arturo interjected.

ARTURO
It's quite simple, Ms. Welles. The equipment used by Dr. Davis created a field around the planet that affected our timer, giving us a perpetual window of opportunity of two days after the entry slide. Quinn's work allowed the rate to increase, allowing us to leave as soon six hours in.

WADE
Yeah, really simple.

QUINN
Enough, guys. Let's get to a hotel. We have a day and a half here.

The next day, at the hotel, the sliders were preparing to leave.

QUINN
Hey, Remmy. Did you check this world out? We may have better luck this time around.

REMBRANDT
Nope, no Slidology, no Sliders show. Maybe next time.

QUINN
Yeah, right.

Quinn was sarcastic, but he meant what he said deep down. This was getting tiresome. He wanted to explore the multiverse, but there were too many barriers on this trek. Next time, it would be different.

ARTURO
Here we go.

Arturo opened the vortex, and all four jumped in.

The vortex opened on a street, deserted at the moment. The four sliders emerged and looked around. Rembrandt seemed to be the most focused.

REMBRANDT
Guys, I think I've been here before.

WADE
Is this the world you left?

REMBRANDT
I don't know, but I sure have a feeling of déja vù.

ARTURO
Let's have a look around.

Rembrandt kept trying to remember which world he was on. He was clueless. But then he came upon a familiar building. That's where he had seen this world. This was his lucky day.

REMBRANDT
Guys, I know where we are.

Rembrandt and his fellow sliders looked up. It was obvious. The sliders were looking at Dr. Geiger's laboratory.

The sliders approached the front door and were met by a guard.

GUARD
What do you'll want? This place is off-limits for civilians.

Rembrandt looked at the guard.

GUARD
Wait! I know you. You were here a while ago, back before Dr. Davis left.

Rembrandt looked at his friends with an ecstatic face. This was either Diana's world, or one very close to it.

GUARD
Do you know where Dr. Davis is?

REMBRANDT
If you let us in, I can explain everything to you.

Rembrandt sat and talked with the guard, explaining his story to the guard. The guard shared what he knew, lending further proof to Rembrandt's claim.

On the other side of the room, Wade watched while Quinn and Arturo examined the timer.

ARTURO
There seems to be no problem whatsoever.

WADE
That's great!

QUINN
But we won't know for sure until we make the next slide.

Rembrandt walked over to the others.

REMBRANDT
I was right! This is Diana and Mallory's world.

ARTURO
Excellent!

WADE
How so?

QUINN
Wade, we can use the quantum signatures of the people on this world to find Remmy's friends. All we have to do is stop by home, hook it up to the equipment and then find the other Quinn!

ARTURO
Maybe not, Mr. Mallory. I believe this laboratory has the equipment to do all of that. Our next slide will bring us to Quinn!

REMBRANDT
Yeah! So, how long will this take?

QUINN
It shouldn't take too long to get the signature, but it will take a while to find the matching world. It shouldn't take us past the limit, and anyway, we should let the timer rest. We don't know the effects of the change yet.

Rembrandt and Wade went to explore this world, while Arturo and Quinn got help from the lab workers.

SCIENTIST
Hello, I'm Dr. Leo Palmer. I took over after the disappearance of Dr. Geiger and Dr. Davis.

ARTURO
Well, Dr. Palmer, it is good to meet you. I am Professor Maximillian Arturo and this is Quinn Mallory.

Quinn introduced himself and headed off to work on the quantum signature. Arturo reset the equipment in the lab for their purposes and sat down to observe.

Rembrandt decided to see if his double was a star on this world, while Wade checked into the hotel. When Remmy entered the store, though, he was surprised to see his double.

REMBRANDT DOUBLE
Who are you?

Remmy thought fast. His story wasn't too good.

REMBRANDT
Name's Jimmy Brown. I just want to look at some music.

REMBRANDT DOUBLE
No, you're not! You're my clone. You look exactly like me! I may work in this store, but I'm actually a science buff. I don't even like music. I know all of the secrets the government is keeping from us. You are proof! Once this hits the internet...

Rembrandt had to think quickly. He didn't want this to get out of hand.

REMBRANDT
Wait! I'm not your clone. I'm your double from another dimension.

REMBRANDT DOUBLE
That's even better! I'm not letting you out of my sight! I'm RB. Nice to meet you!

REMBRANDT
Well, I have to leave in a couple of days.

RB
Then, I've only got a couple days to interview you.

Rembrandt's double grabbed a tape recorder, a pad of paper, and a pen.

RB
Now, what worlds have you been to? Be specific!

Rembrandt went along with it, stifling his irritation.

Back at the lab, Quinn and Arturo were finishing up the quantum signature experiment.

ARTURO
And that should just about do it.

QUINN
Yep, I got it!

PALMER
Now, here's the equipment. We've made leaps and bounds in tracking wormholes and things like that, but I don't know about finding specific people.

QUINN
Just leave that to the Professor and I. We've gotten kinda used to this.

Quinn smiled. He was glad this journey was almost over, but treasured his moments with Arturo. Soon, they would find his Quinn, and they could all return home. He would miss the Professor.

At the hotel, both Rembrandts came into the room.

WADE
What's going on?

REMBRANDT
This is RB. He's my double.

WADE
What's he doing here?

REMBRANDT
I don't know. He followed me here, asking me about sliding.

WADE
Can't you get rid of him?

REMBRANDT (exasperated)
Believe me, I've tried.

RB was examining the room, looking over the hotel items. Wade had only been with him for a couple minutes, and she was already annoyed.

RB
Where is the "sliding" device?

REMBRANDT
Look, RB. We've got to get going.

RB
Well, I'm going too. I've got to get more for my website interview.

Rembrandt knew he wasn't getting rid of RB anytime soon. He "changed his mind" and he, Wade, and RB spent the night at the hotel, in a lengthy Q & A session.

In the morning, Rembrandt woke up to the sound of RB watching Star Trek.

REMBRANDT
Oh, man! It wasn't a nightmare!

RB
Hey, buddy. Live long and prosper!

RB gave Remmy the Vulcan V-fingered salute, annoying him even more. Remmy looked at the clock. Just one more day.

RB
So what's on the syllabus today?

REMBRANDT
Well, we're going to check on our friends. You stay here and -- watch your show.

RB
Nah, I think I'll come with you.

Rembrandt knew he was never getting rid of his unwelcome houseguest. The man was like a disease.

Quinn, Palmer, and the Professor had initiated the scan. All they could do is wait for the signal. So, when Remmy, Wade, and RB showed up, the three scientists were asleep.

Quinn was awakened by an insistent beeping noise. Immediately, he knew what was happening.

QUINN
Oh no! Professor, wake up!

Arturo woke up and looked around.

ARTURO
What is it, my boy?

QUINN
The power's draining. We overestimated their power supply.

Palmer was awake, and tried to add some insight to the situation.

PALMER
Maybe I can explain that. See, we've been doing a lot of scans for wormholes recently. I was hoping that the backup power would hold out.

ARTURO
How much time do we have?

QUINN
I'd say about three hours.

Rembrandt and Wade made their presence known.

REMBRANDT
How much longer do we need?

ARTURO
We don't know, Mr. Brown.

QUINN
Who's your friend, Remmy?

Rembrandt was not pleased to be reminded.

REMBRANDT
This is RB, my double on this world.

RB
Hey! So you're Quinn. Is that the timer?

Quinn shot Remmy a disapproving look. Remmy returned it in kind.

RB
Cool! It's like a phaser.

RB picked up the timer and began mock-blasting it at others in the room, making ridiculous 'zapping' noises. Quinn ran over and reclaimed the device.

QUINN
It's not a toy!

Quinn sat back down, and RB went to talk to Remmy. Remmy just hoped that RB would leave.

A couple hours later, the power began to fluctuate on and off. Quinn began to get worried. He knew that they could return, but he wanted to get this round of Sliding over with. It was nearing an end.

The panel began to beep again.

QUINN
No!

ARTURO
How long?

QUINN
Thirty minutes. And that's if we can re-route enough power here.

Ten minutes later, the stress was rising. Even RB wouldn't dare say a word. He just looked over his notes, and began to visualize his internet article. He would be the king of cyberspace rumors.

At last, the sliders heard the sound they were waiting for. The buzzing noise of a co-ordinate match.

QUINN
Its a match. I don't have enough power to decipher whether it's the right one. I have a couple distinct signatures.

Quinn uploaded the coordinates of the world and went to talk to Palmer.

QUINN
Have you sent anyone out sliding?

PALMER
Not to my knowledge.

QUINN
Then, we can risk it.

WADE
We're going to try?

ARTURO
Yes, Ms. Welles.

RB got up, as if he was going with the sliders. Rembrandt had an idea, though.

RB
This is going to be so cool!

REMBRANDT
Look RB, we'd let you watch and all, but when the vortex opens, there is a massive surge of radiation. If you haven't slid before, it could kill you.

RB
Bummer. Well, I could get it from the cameras.

REMBRANDT
Yeah, good idea!

RB walked out slowly, discouraged.

QUINN
Remmy, I'm surprised at you!

REMBRANDT
Well, he was annoying me! He's a crazy, Star Trek watching, annoying, little freak!

WADE
You are the same person!

REMBRANDT
We are not the same person!

The sliders laughed.

QUINN
And what do you have against Star Trek?

REMBRANDT
I don't know. It's too weird for me.

ARTURO
Stranger than our lives?

Rembrandt looked puzzled.

WADE
He's got you there, Remmy.

QUINN
Just for the record... we're glad he's gone too.

When it came time for the slide, Quinn held up the timer.

QUINN
Let's hope we get lucky on this one.

The sliders agreed.

WADE
Now, are we safe with our radius?

ARTURO
I believe so Miss Welles, but it's impossible to be sure until we try it.

REMBRANDT
That's not what I want to hear, Professor.

QUINN
It'll be all right, Remmy. Ready?

Quinn opened the vortex, and the sliders leapt inside. Palmer watched the tableau in amazement. Seconds after the gateway shut, RB came running in, hoping the danger was over.

RB
Did they make it?

To be continued . . .
