Sliders: Earth 214

WADE
You ready, Quinn?

Quinn was asleep, as he had been for most of the slide. The last few weeks had been hard on him. He'd left behind his world (his decision, but now, he was starting to regret it), his prototype was flawed, and he hadn't slept in the last couple of slides. This was his reward for all his hard work.

WADE
Get up, sleepyhead!

QUINN
I'm up! I'm up, when's the slide.

WADE
Thirty seconds!

Quinn, startled, fell out of his bed. He was fully clothed, so he was immediately ready. Wade opened the vortex at the two day limit. To allow Quinn to sleep, they had to. Everyone needed their rest. Continuous six-hour slides take a lot out of a person.

Rembrandt was the last one into the vortex. He kept his eyes open and trained on Quinn, years of sliding having inured him to the vertigo of the roller-coaster ride. Suddenly, Quinn made a sharp turn to the left and down another fork of the tunnel. Remmy braced for impact, but Quinn's passageway swallowed him up and sealed itself. Remmy continued forward.

On the other side, Rembrandt landed alone. He searched for the others to no avail. This had happened a few times before, so he took a minute to wait for them...

In a laboratory, another vortex opened inside a glass cage. A scientist looked on with detached interest as each slider landed.

SCIENTIST
Well, if it isn't Quinn Mallory. I guess the power outage has disabled my machine. Oh well, you'll soon be dead as all the others.

Quinn looked on at the familiar face.

QUINN
Dr. Laze?

LAZE
Oh my God! Quinn Mallory? THE Quinn Mallory? Then, my crusade is almost over. Now, I can actually see you die. This power outage is a blessing! So, I suppose you never made it home?

Laze said this, despite the fact that he knew the answer. He hated Quinn, but respected him. Plus, there was one slider missing, and another added.

QUINN
Actually, I did. Now, I'm on another journey.

LAZE
Always helping people, aren't you, Quinn... Now, are you going to disrespect me again, or will you introduce me to your friend?

QUINN
This is Professor Arturo. Don't worry, Professor. He may be a "doctor," but he shouldn't have the right to be in the same room with you.

LAZE
Cute... Now where is Mr. Brown?

Nobody knew. Quinn gave Laze the answer he wanted.

QUINN
Remmy made it back home. He made it big.

LAZE
Lucky for him. Less lucky for you.

Laze laughed, knowing what would happen to the sliders.

QUINN
Don't worry, guys. We'll get out of this.

Remmy was worried. He was alone, again. He was without a timer, again. In a couple days, his journey would be officially over. That is, unless he could find his friends.

The main distinguishing feature of this Earth was Rembrandt laughed. It reminded him of Miami. Trying to forget his current situation, Remmy thought of a gig he did in Miami. He sang "Tears in My 'Fro" in his head over and over.

ARTURO
Quinn, I think I've figured it out.

QUINN
How to get out of here?

ARTURO
No. How to change the sliding radius. We'd have to wait for the entire two days to pass, and slide after they expire.

WADE
How does that change anything?

ARTURO
My dear Miss Welles. We travel to Los Angeles during that time. The sliding radius should reset, theoretically.

WADE
Now why don't I like the sounds of that?

QUINN
Don't worry, Wade. It'll work, but that'll have to wait. We're getting out of here in six hours.

WADE
What about Remmy?

ARTURO
That's not a wise decision, Quinn. I have to disagree. We will find a way out of here. Plus, we cannot leave Rembrandt.

Wade nodded her assent.

QUINN
We can always slide back.

ARTURO
Wrong, Mr. Mallory. We cannot. This "Slide Trap" Laze has created is offline, but only temporarily. We can't be at all sure when it will reactivate. When we slide, it will have been six hours since we arrived, and it will be six hours later than that after the next world. By then, I'm guessing, it will be back online, and we will be eradicated. I say we make the best of the situation, and try and reason with him.

WADE
I don't think he wants to reason.

QUINN
Definitely not.

ARTURO
What happened between you all, Mr. Mallory?

QUINN
Back when we were sliding, we came upon a world where Sweden was in control. A very strange world. Laze was the head of a lab working on developing Slide tech. The lab was under attack, constantly, and he kept telling us it was a group of American rebels. Well, the "rebels" broke through, and we escaped, but not before I saw a couple. They were wearing army uniforms.

Arturo shot Quinn an odd look.

QUINN
Don't worry Professor, I'll explain. You see, Laze was a fugitive, hiding out in the lab. He had the scientists there working on a sliding device. He was, in essence, holding the lab hostage. While escaping, I confronted him on this. He admitted it, and we acted as if it didn't phase us. I lied about when we were leaving, but when we slid, he followed us through the vortex. On the next world, we left him.

Even though the sliders didn't see him, Laze sat quietly, listening to Quinn's story. But he had enough of this.

LAZE
And that's it, Mr. Mallory? That's how you would like to think it ended. Unfortunately, it's not. Yes, you did drop me off on a fairly standard world, and in a way, it's what I wanted. But in the next few weeks, my new home was attacked.

Quinn was hit with the answer. He didn't hate Laze. He just didn't feel like bringing him along.

LAZE
The Kromaggs attacked my world, taking me prisoner. Luckily for me, that world was freed by the Travel Agency, the interdimensional police, and I was released. I asked if I could have a lab on some out-of-the-way world to do a little work. They agreed, but supervised me for a while. I spent several weeks working on "a way to track wormholes." Which, of course, was my cover story. I wanted to destroy you, but that wasn't enough. I knew there were many more like you out there, so I decided to kill all of you. The Slide Trap pulls your vortex into this "cage", and incinerates you in seconds. Ahh, this is going to be a lot of fun.

Rembrandt tried to stay confident. He had no money, and apparently no double on this Earth: the ATM had rejected his number. Rembrandt figured his best option would be to find some work. While walking towards the hotel, someone stopped him.

MAN
Mr. Brown.

REMBRANDT
You talking to me?

MAN
Yes. My name is Lester Burns. I was an assistant of Dr. David Laze; he runs the lab on Fifth and Main. Are you a slider?

It was worth a shot.

REMBRANDT
Yeah. How did you know that?

LESTER
That means his trap is offline. Or you have a way around it...?

REMBRANDT
Not that I know of.

LESTER
That means his security is down. Thank you.

Lester walked away fast, but Rembrandt was curious.

REMBRANDT
Hey, wait a minute. What do you know about sliding? And how'd you know my name?

LESTER
I know a bit about the science... and I've encountered more than a few of your doubles in my work. Man, this must be your lucky day.

REMBRANDT
Actually, it's the opposite. See, I was sliding with some of my friends, and I was separated from them. The vortex split in two directions, and I went the other way.

LESTER
How long into the slide?

REMBRANDT
I don't know... halfway?

LESTER
Then, your friends are probably still alive in the complex. Here. Let's help each other. I need to get into the complex, and you need to save your friends. Partners?

REMBRANDT
Sure.

They shook hands and walked toward the lab.

Five hours. It had been five hours since they were captured. Hunger was beginning to settle. Quinn was starving. He had missed dinner and slept through breakfast. Now he was missing lunch. What he wouldn't give for a juicy hamburger, right about now. Wade was getting restless. She was bored, so she decided to talk to Laze.

WADE
What's the problem?

Laze was annoyed, but nevertheless, answered her question.

LAZE
My equipment uses quite a bit of energy. I had been meaning to let it rest for a while, but it's been a busy catching season. I guess my auxiliary power went out. It turned off just in time.

Laze smiled at Quinn. Quinn tried not to let his anger show.

LAZE
Don't worry about me. The aux power was on, meaning that my main power switched off. It starts to recharge immediately after it goes off. The aux has about a week or two's worth of power, so the main should be starting any minute. And don't worry about me leaving. I wouldn't miss this for the world.

Rembrandt and Lester reached the compound. There was a sign, "No trespassers!", on the wall. Lester checked the laser emitter mounted at eye level.

LESTER
No power, all right. The laser would be on there, where you could take the retina scan. It's okay, walk on through.

Lester wasn't sure if what he was saying was the truth. He had seen devices that appeared to be offline, but were actually ready to go. Rembrandt was the trusting type, so Lester knew he would "test" the defenses for him.

Rembrandt walked through, unharmed.

REMBRANDT
All right. Everything's clear. But the doors aren't open.

LESTER
Don't worry. When Laze put in the laser security lock, he decided not to change the code on the keypad.

Lester quickly punched in the correct numbers and the doors opened... then closed immediately after Rembrandt and Lester entered. A new set of doors loomed in front of them, with no apparent way out.

LESTER
No! This must be a precaution. We'll have to wait for the power to come back on.

REMBRANDT
But if the power comes back on, that means that my friends will be....

LESTER
Well, the power comes back in some areas before the others. I'm sure the slide trap is the last one to be turned on.

But he wasn't. In fact, Rembrandt's friends were probably already dead.

The sliders heard a buzzing sound. Quinn, Wade, and the Professor began to get nervous. Quinn pulled the timer out of his pocket. The power was coming back on. Quinn knew the consequences, though. He looked at the Professor. Arturo reluctantly nodded a fraction of an inch. Wade didn't want to leave Remmy behind, but they were no good to him dead. And Remmy wouldn't get the timer back anyway. She gave her silent approval as well.

Quinn motioned to open the vortex, knowing perfectly well that the procedure would wipe his home co-ordinates off. He did have a contingency plan, however.

LAZE
No! Not yet!

Laze ran to the control panel. He pressed a button on the panel, and moved the lever, apparently shutting off some power.

LAZE
I'm not ready to see you die.

QUINN
So you're willing to give up more Sliders' lives.

LAZE
You don't get it, Quinn. I only turned off the mechanism that would kill you. The trap is fully functional. Which is why you should expect company.

Quinn put the timer back into his pocket. Wade and Arturo sighed in relief.

LAZE
Oh, and did I mention? Don't try opening your vortex while inside the cage. Not only will you be resetting the timer, but you'll end up back here. So don't bother.

Quinn was frustrated. So much for that plan.

With power restored, the doors opened and let Rembrandt and Lester through. Fearing the worst, they broke into a run.

LESTER
This way. The Slide Trap's at the end of the hall. They soon reached the door in question, which slid open automatically like the others in the complex. Lester's eyes were drawn immediately to his nemesis.

LESTER
Laze!

Laze's face turned cold.

LAZE
Lester Burns. How did you get in here?

LESTER
Rembrandt here helped me.

WADE
Remmy!

REMBRANDT
Guys! Man, I am so glad to see you!

LAZE
Mr. Brown. I guess you are along with the group, after all. Don't trust this weasel. He'll stab you in the back first chance he gets. He tried to corrupt the slide trap.

QUINN
Well, he should definitely get five to ten for that.

Laze ignored Quinn's sarcastic comment. Now, Quinn didn't care. He wasn't in control. That made him nervous.

LESTER
I knew that I'd get back. The others might have ignored my mission for the time being, but when I get the slide trap, they'll make me a general.

This was bad, Quinn thought. He didn't like where this was going.

Lester's face shifted... then disappeared altogether, replaced by a Kromagg snarl.

LAZE
I knew it! That's why you were so curious. You wanted the schematics!

Rembrandt moved up behind Lester and knocked him out with a swift blow to the head.

REMBRANDT
Get them out of there, Laze!

LAZE
NO! I've waited for this forever. There's no way I'm going to give up the fight now.

QUINN
Look, there's no way I can apologize for what I did to you. I simply couldn't risk the safety of the others. Now, let us go. We need to leave.

Laze was still hesitant. He didn't want to allow it. Plus, the Kromaggs were doubtlessly on their way.

QUINN
We'll take you with us!

Laze put his head down. He felt as if this were the end of the road.

LAZE
Fine.

WADE
I thought you said that there was no way out.

LAZE
I built a way out just in case. Just sit tight.

Laze pressed a button, and an intense red-tinted light filled the cage. Rembrandt turned on the physicist, outraged.

REMBRANDT
What the devil did you do to my friends?

LAZE
That's my way out.

The focus of the light shifted out of the cage and faded away, revealing the three sliders safe and sound. Remmy rushed over to Wade and embraced her. Then, he shook the Professor's and Quinn's hands.

REMBRANDT
How much time we got?

QUINN
About thirty minutes. I'm going to grab some food. I've never been this hungry in my life!

Quinn ran to the facility's kitchen and fixed himself a sandwich. Then, he sat, working on the timer. Twenty-five minutes later, Quinn returned.

QUINN
Five minutes to go.

REMBRANDT
Hey, where did Lester go?

Just then, a blood-red vortex opened. Several Kromaggs stepped out

LAZE
Blast! He must have turned off the trap!

KROMAGG
Hand over this facility peacefully, and you will not be harmed.

Arturo saw what was happening. This had been the first Kromagg he had seen. Ugly creatures, they were. And from what he had heard, they weren't ones to deal with.

Quinn looked at the timer. Four minutes. He had to stall. They were too close to risk it.

Laze snuck off to the controls. He wasn't going to let an armada of troops through to this world. One of the Kromaggs saw him, and pulled out a weapon.

KROMAGG
Freeze, human!

Laze began to work faster, and the Kromagg fired at him. The blast hit Laze in the arm. Rembrandt took this opportunity to attack one of the Kromaggs. Arturo and Quinn joined in. Rembrandt got one of the Kromagg weapons, and subdued the other soldiers.

REMBRANDT
Let's go, Q-Ball!

A minute and a half left. He still had to stall.

QUINN
No Remmy! 90 seconds!

The other Kromaggs began to get up. Laze crawled to join the sliders.

LAZE
Now, Mr. Mallory!

Laze looked into Quinn's eyes. They had to escape. Laze, clasping his arm, led the sliders down a corridor. At the end, they entered a room.

LAZE
How much time, Mallory?

QUINN
Twenty seconds.

The Kromaggs entered the corridor and began to try and open the door.

QUINN
Now!

Quinn opened the vortex, and all the sliders, including Laze dove into the vortex.

The Kromaggs opened the door and looked at the empty room. Although they had lost the sliders, they had a mission to accomplish, and the facility was theirs. They walked back down the corridor to the panel.

KROMAGG
And this panel has the information on all the visitors.

The Kromagg nodded, and they began to download the data.

Laze and co. hit concrete on a world with a distinctive retro-50's flavor. The pre-fab houses looked like they could have been lifted off the set of 'Leave it to Beaver.'

LAZE
How much time on this world?

REMBRANDT
Don't even try that! It'll get you nowhere!

The other sliders laughed. Quinn didn't though, looking at Laze. He thanked him for escaping, but he knew what had to happen. Laze knew too. He didn't understand why he didn't fit in with this group, though.

LAZE
This world looks nice. It'll make a good home.

The others smiled as they left Laze admiring his new world. For his part, he was already wondering what level of technology they possessed here...
