Sliders: Earth 214

6.12 | Shockwaves

Half a dozen uniformed police officers battered down a door and followed their quarry into a ceiling vent. The man they were chasing emerged onto the roof and ran to a device. The police aimed their guns at him.

POLICEMAN
Freeze!

MAN
I'll do it! I'll throw the switch!

The man put his hand to a device. The police didn't know what the device could do, so they backed off, still pointing their guns.

Quinn looked at the timer. One minute. This world was normal enough, but not Earth Prime. Quinn was ready to go home.

He opened the vortex, and jumped inside. Arturo followed and Wade jumped in.

The man had his hand on the switch. He was going to pull the lever. The police believed that it was a hoax and moved to fire at the man.

POLICEMAN
Put your hands up!

MAN
I'm not going back!

The man pulled the switch and a barrier of crackling red energy formed around his position. After holding for a few seconds, the wave rushed outwards and knocked down the policemen. The man frantically tried to pull the switch back, but it wouldn't move. The shockwave continued to spread across the city, knocking people unconscious. The wave approached the vortex as Rembrandt jumped inside. Rembrandt saw it as he jumped. Maggie prepared to leap, but was struck by the shockwave. She was knocked down, and the vortex closed directly in front of her.

A few minutes later, Maggie pulled herself up and looked around. She was alone. She had missed the slide...

On the other side, the four sliders emerged. When the vortex closed, they all looked around for Maggie. She was nowhere to be found.

WADE
What happened?

QUINN
I don't know.

REMBRANDT
I think I know. There was a sort of energy wave coming towards us as I jumped inside the vortex. It was too late for me to yell to Maggie. We gotta go back for her.

Quinn gestured helplessly to the timer.

QUINN
We can't for a day.

WADE
I hope she's okay.

REMBRANDT
She's a tough girl. She'll make it, I know it!

Rembrandt was just trying to keep things calm. In truth, that shockwave had looked pretty vicious, and Rembrandt feared for Maggie's safety.

Maggie struggled up and looked around. There was little structural damage, but everyone around her was unconscious. This was bad. In her semi-conscious state, she spent a minute or two assuming that Quinn would come to her assistance. Finally, she decided to seek out some help.

She walked through the streets, which were littered with unconscious bodies. No one was awake. She had to find some answers. She walked towards the building that was glowing red. That's where she'd find them. As she approached the door, she fell, and began to tremble. She was having a seizure. The shockwave had affected her more than she had thought. When it was over, she arose and walked up the stairs. She was still a little dazed, so it took her a while.

She reached the roof and saw where the red light was coming from. The man's device had created a "forcefield" around the immediate vicinity. Maggie gestured that she meant no harm, and the field's occupant reluctantly disabled the machine.

MAN
Who are you?

MAGGIE
Name's Maggie Beckett. This your machine?

MAN
Yeah... Who wants to know?

MAGGIE
Just trying to get some answers from the only man left in San Francisco not unconscious.

MAN
I didn't mean to. I just wanted to... disable the police. Now, I'm really in for it. You're not from the government or the army, are you?

MAGGIE
Not for a while now, anyway.

Maggie didn't really want to talk to this man, but he was apparently the city's only hope.

MAGGIE
So, what do you plan to do?

MAN
Lie low. Maybe the army would think that it was a mistake, and I can get away.

MAGGIE
Shouldn't you turn yourself in and accept the consequences?

MAN
Gosh, you remind me of McGruff the Crime Bear!

Maggie laughed; that was a new one.

MAN
By the way, I'm Thomas Wilson.

On another world, Quinn and the Professor were talking. They had been busy the last few weeks and decided to talk of home.

ARTURO
Now, my boy, Rembrandt has been telling me that you have been told that you are from another Earth.

QUINN
Yeah... my mother told me on another world that I was adopted.

ARTURO
Well, I have some disturbing news. That might be the truth. I was trying to ignore the fact, and I haven't told the others. When we were searching for you, originally, your quantum signature differed from that of the others.

QUINN
I knew it.

ARTURO
What will you do, my boy?

QUINN
Well, I've got to get you all home. Then, I'll take Wade back and find the truth. I've got to save Colin, also...

Arturo looked confused.

QUINN
Colin's my brother.

Arturo didn't fully understand, but went along with it.

QUINN
It's not as simple as it used to be.

ARTURO
It never is, my boy. It never is.

Thomas was working on the machine, and Maggie began to have another seizure.

THOMAS
Maggie!

Maggie collapsed and began to shake violently. This one lasted longer than the other, but she recovered again. Thomas helped her lean against the door.

THOMAS
Now, that's not normal. You were hit with the shockwave. Damn! I never meant to cause harm. I just wanted to escape!

MAGGIE
No, Thomas. I was out of the way.

Maggie didn't want to reveal that she was a slider. He might ask to come along.

THOMAS
How long was the radius?

Maggie didn't want to answer the question, so she acted as if she had fallen asleep.

THOMAS
It figures.

Rembrandt and Wade were exploring this world. The streets were unusually empty. This world was odd. Nobody was outside. They passed an apartment building and saw a woman.

WOMAN
You two! Get out of the streets! A flood is coming!

Wade and Rembrandt looked at the sky. It might rain, but they didn't think a flood was possible. But they knew nothing of this world, and the woman did. They decided to come inside.

The woman met them at the stairs. She took them to her apartment and began to talk.

WOMAN
What are you two doing on the streets? Didn't you watch the weather?

REMBRANDT
Not today.

WADE
Yeah, we must have missed that today.

The woman looked worried for them.

WOMAN
You missed the weather?

The woman's face was stern. She seemed very serious about something as small as missing the weather.

Remmy and Wade were confused. Something must be weird about the weather on this world.

REMBRANDT
What is supposed to happen?

WOMAN
I told you, floods are coming.

Thomas was helping Maggie. She was still recovering from her latest seizure. They were a result of the shockwave, no doubt. Maggie knew this, but decided to keep it from Thomas. At a time like this, more guilt was the last thing he needed.

THOMAS
I guess it began a few years ago. This old building's a research center for a computer company. When Macrosoft moved down here, people lost jobs. I was one of them. I never did believe the crap they were spreading about the move creating more jobs. Not for a second.

Maggie began to sit up as Thomas opened up to her.

THOMAS
My boss agreed to let me stay around, making up some phony position. I wasn't getting paid, though. It didn't matter. I guess I had begun to go mad at that point. I wanted to get my revenge on the city. I stayed after hours working, researching ways in which I could make the city pay for my grief.

MAGGIE
Why didn't you go try and find another job?

THOMAS
I tried! I took tests, went to interviews, tried to go out of state and even out of the country. Nothing worked. My only way to make money was by doing chores for my neighbors. It was like I was a twelve year old boy. I guess it was a month or so ago when the office started getting suspicious. I was in here almost twenty hours a day. I got no sleep. I hadn't shaved. I probably looked like a yeti. They told me to go home, get some sleep, get myself cleaned up and come back when I was going to act like a person. That drove me over the edge. I wasn't even a human being to them anymore! So, I spent even more time there. I moved around to make it look like I was in and out, but I was always working. I had built the device long ago. A simple K-wave turbine set to overload, resulting in a massive shockwave. The problem was that I couldn't find a way to cause enough damage. My device would only give them the equivalent of a static shock or maybe an ice cream headache. Nothing major. And it wasn't nearly big enough.

Thomas wiped his face as he stared out onto the city. It was dead.

THOMAS
I began to hack into medical institutes. I even broke into criminal organizations. It's not like it mattered. I was over the edge, and I was already doing illegal activity. I was damned either way. Finally, I hit the jackpot. I found a new treatment for hysteria on an experimental insane asylum's website. There's a part of the brain, that if it's hit with a K-wave on a certain wavelength, it'll render the person unconscious. It had never been tested on humans before, so I thought I'd do them a favor. I adapted my machine and was prepared to set it off on an unknowing city. Unfortunately, my co-workers had turned in reports saying that I was "unfit for work at the company". My boss agreed, and he said that if I ever returned, he would call the police. So, I retreated home, and began to hack into the security system.

Maggie looked at Thomas, wondering how it got this far.

THOMAS
I know what you're thinking. But I was far beyond rational thought. I found a way to disable the system for a few minutes, and I sneaked in without anyone noticing. I must have forgotten to disable the alarm on the roof, because minutes later, the police arrived. I got scared and I set the machine off. As soon as I saw the first ones collapse, I regained my senses. I was too late, though. It happened so fast. If anyone dies...

Thomas put his face in his hands.

THOMAS
...I don't know what I'll do...

Thomas stood up and looked at the horizon. There still seemed to be little movement in the city. The people directly below them were still unconscious, but Thomas wanted to check the entire city.

On the other world Quinn and Arturo were talking about Maggie's situation, and what could have happened.

ARTURO
Quinn, now I know that we must go back for Ms. Beckett, but we must remember what the odds are of finding her.

QUINN
I know, Professor. But we've left her behind before, and gotten around it.

Arturo looked worried, wondering about how many times Maggie had been left behind on some world.

QUINN
Its a long story, Professor.

In the woman's apartment, the woman was quietly watching the Weather Channel, not concentrating on anything else. Rembrandt and Wade assured themselves of their safety and decided not to tune in.

Wade observed the walls.

WADE
Remmy, I lived in an apartment like this in college. The walls are very thin. I remember being annoyed at the fact that I was always hearing what other people were watching on TV. You could tell if they were watching the same show as you, or if they were watching something different.

REMBRANDT
I don't hear anything.

The woman looked at the two with a stern face, and then her facial expression changed into one of worry. Why weren't they concerned with the weather?

Wade continued, with a quieter voice.

WADE
Right. Now, that means two things. Either the people to the sides of this apartment aren't watching TV, or we're not with the only weather freak in this building.

REMBRANDT
What makes people so concerned with the weather?

WADE
Maybe we should watch.

Rembrandt agreed, but he had a strange sense of danger. They had been on a world, once, where television controlled your mind, using hypnotic images. Maybe the Weather Channel had a similar grasp over the minds of this world. The thought of this made Rembrandt laugh to himself, though.

Thomas returned with the binoculars he had been given as a present. He wanted to check the surrounding blocks. All the people in the streets were not moving. This made Thomas nervous. If any of these people had long-lasting injuries, he was in for a lot of trouble. If any of them died.....
He chose not to think of that.

The city was dark. In Thomas's section of San Francisco, not many buildings were lit. Because of this, Maggie saw something.

MAGGIE
Thomas. Check over there. That light by the horizon. See it?

THOMAS
Yeah. It looks like some sort of encampment.

MAGGIE
When I was in the military, I always heard stories of soldiers that went into towns where there had been a deadly disease or biological warfare. They would settle in an area far enough away to not be involved, but close enough that they would be able to watch over the area.

THOMAS
Why didn't they just survey the area with gas masks?

MAGGIE
Well, on my world, gas masks weren't invented as late as...

Maggie caught herself. She hoped that Thomas hadn't caught on, but he did.

THOMAS
What do you mean, "your world".

Maggie thought quickly. She still didn't want to reveal what had happened. She came up with another excuse.

MAGGIE
Well, I lived in a very isolated area. It was "our own little world".

Thomas looked as if he believed Maggie's story and turned to the horizon.

THOMAS
So what do you think they're doing? Building some sort of quarantine?

MAGGIE
That, or they're just waiting to search the place.

Thomas got worried.

THOMAS
They're going to find me. I have to get out of here.

Thomas began gathering his things, but he stopped when he saw Maggie struggling to get up.

THOMAS
Don't try and get up. You're too weak. We'll wait until morning to leave.

It was getting dark, and the woman was still fixated on the television. Remmy and Wade were watching and saw no reason for any panic at all.

WEATHER MAN
This is an update. There has been a flood spotted a few miles north of Sacramento. So anyone along the West Coast, from Oregon to California, should take cover immediately.

The woman became very nervous. She began grabbing items frantically as it began to rain. Remmy and Wade watched on in amazement. They looked at each other. Sacramento was over 100 miles away. Why were they even concerned?

WOMAN
Oh my God! My word! My brother-in-law lives outside Sacramento! Oh no!

Rembrandt had to intervene.

REMBRANDT
Lady! Calm down! Now, there is nothing to be concerned about. It's simply a flash flood watch. It happens all the time. There's nothing to be worried about.

WOMAN
But it's in Sacramento already!

Wade tried to calm the woman down, as Rembrandt watched people flood to their cars to flee the city. This world was extremely paranoid about the weather. Remmy was just glad they were only here for a day.

On the other side of town, Arturo and Quinn were also seeing the effects of the bulletin.

ARTURO
What is going on?

QUINN
They're fleeing the city!

ARTURO
What the devil for?

QUINN
I don't know.

Quinn turned on the news, and the weather men were monopolizing all the stations.

QUINN
All there is is a flash flood warning for Sacramento!

Quinn seemed to be insulting the world, so a calmer Arturo answered him.

ARTURO
Different worlds, Mr. Mallory.

QUINN
Paranoid worlds, Professor.

Quinn glanced at the timer.

QUINN
We've got about 10 hours here. I hope Wade and Remmy aren't out in this mess.

ARTURO
Oh, I doubt they are.

Morning came and Thomas wasn't able to sleep. He was worried about being caught. He wanted to let Maggie rest, but felt the need to move her. He woke her up and they moved downstairs. Maggie was still weak, but she moved with Thomas.

The military was closing in. They spotted Thomas and Maggie.

ARMY OFFICER
Freeze!

Thomas and Maggie began to run.

OFFICER
Stop! We only want to ask some questions about the shockwaves!

Thomas kept running, but Maggie fell behind. She was having another seizure. She collapsed and the army caught up to her.

OFFICER
He's getting away.

COMMANDER
Let him go. Let's get her to a hospital.

Maggie woke in a hospital. Everyone was around her.

QUINN
Maggie! It's good to see you awake. It'd be pretty bad if you missed another slide.

MAGGIE
How long?

ARTURO
Two hours.

MAGGIE
What about Thomas?

The army officer in the room made his presence known.

OFFICER
Your friend's in a shootout on top of his apartment building. He's threatening to use the machine again. Don't worry, we're well out of its range.

MAGGIE
I've got to stop him!

QUINN
Maggie, you're in no condition to do anything like that. The doctors said that you had a seizure. Do you know why?

MAGGIE
Probably just because I'm tired, but I've got to stop him. I'm the only one who can.

THOMAS
I'll do it! I did it before, and I'll do it again.

POLICEMAN
I don't believe that! You're obviously in emotional shock over what you did, so why don't you turn yourself in?

THOMAS
No!

Maggie made it to the roof, in a wheelchair, being pushed by the officer.

MAGGIE
Thomas, don't!

THOMAS
Maggie!

MAGGIE
Let it go, Thomas! Just explain that it was an accident, and they'll go easy on you.

Thomas was too exhausted to run anymore. He moved to turn off the machine, and a worried officer fired, hitting Thomas in the chest.

MAGGIE
Thomas!

Maggie rose from the wheelchair and stumbled to Thomas's side.

MAGGIE
Thomas!

THOMAS
It's okay, Maggie. I'm free, now.

Maggie rose as Thomas died. She looked over at the officer. She felt sorry, because she had lost a friend, and now an innocent officer would be put on trial for an accident. If only the situation hadn't gotten out of hand...

In an alley, the sliders were preparing to slide.

REMBRANDT
And on this world, the people were ultra-paranoid about a little, old flood watch.

Maggie tried to stay happy, but she wasn't in the mood. She was worried about the seizures, hoping that they would stop once she left. Also, she was thinking about Thomas. She knew he was in a better place.

Quinn looked at Maggie.

QUINN
Ready?

MAGGIE
Yeah...

Quinn opened the vortex. Maggie ran and jumped in, anxious to leave. The others followed. The vortex closed behind them.
