Sliders: Earth 214

6.11 | Morals and Ethics

The vortex opened. Remmy, Wade, Arturo, Quinn, and Maggie flew from the wormhole. Each of them was dressed in bulky winter clothing.

REMBRANDT
Whoa!

QUINN
You said it, Cryin' Man.

REMBRANDT
What are the chances that we would land on three straight ice worlds?

ARTURO
Clearly better than you'd think.

Arturo glanced at the timer.

ARTURO
Let's see. Just over two weeks here.

Each slider, in addition to the large coat and pants, had a mask over their face.

QUINN
Let's get to the hotel and out of these clothes.

ARTURO
Agreed.

They arrived at the hotel desk, which was manned by Gomez Calhoun.

QUINN
Yes, we'd like a suite.

GOMEZ
Would you like the Eskimo room?

MAGGIE
Funny...

GOMEZ
Sorry. No can do. The big convention this week has taken all the rooms. I can get you two large, normal rooms.

WADE
We'll take it.

The sliders moved to their rooms. Guys in one room, and the female sliders in the other.

Rembrandt took off the heavy clothing and went to the bathroom. Quinn turned on the television.

NEWS ANCHOR
Yes, this is a special report. The Reverend Rembrandt Brown, a major civil rights leader, has been shot. His condition is unknown at this moment.

Quinn was shocked. Arturo looked on with the same amazement.

QUINN
Remmy, come in here.

REMBRANDT
Come on guys, I was just about to take a....

Before Rembrandt could finish his sentence, he was shocked by the report.

NEWS ANCHOR
Brown is considered by many the only person who can stop civil war. His emotional speeches, in which he would shed real tears, convinced many people to go against the Californian movement. Advisors believe that if Brown is dead, then, war will break out.

REMBRANDT
Unreal.

ARTURO
I suggest that you lie low until we slide. I don't believe that we should interfere with this world's troubles.

QUINN
Come on, Professor! What about the time you ran for mayor? I would consider that interfering.

ARTURO
Quinn, as I have said, I was helping that world.

Quinn laughed. Rembrandt was fixated on the situation. He was a civil rights leader on this world. That fact hit at home. He wanted to pursue his double, despite the Professor's warning.

Arturo had decided to go to the library. He had been doing this more frequently. He was also keeping a log, more professional than Wade's diary, but still a log of the history of the worlds they visit. This world received a large entry. He returned to the hotel room to alert the others.

When Arturo entered, Quinn was on the bed, still examining the timer. He still had hopes of fixing it, even though they had left Quinn's world over two weeks and three slides ago. Rembrandt was glued to the television.

ARTURO
This world is amazing. It seems that Abraham Lincoln was able to prevent the civil war, by loosening up on the slavery issue. He abolished it five years later, in his third term. They would have voted him in for another term, but he died before they could do it. Back to the important news. California was going to join the Confederacy, but the "war" was over before they could. Now on our world, California joined the Union because there weren't a lot of slave owners. But on this world, it was commonplace. Many people in California refused to give up their slaves, but were forced to do so by the government. The people let it go until the late 1980's. Without the threat of nuclear war, the people decided to look back at their history. Their productivity had been higher with slavery, so the people of California decided to try and get them back. In 1990, they elected a pro-slavery governor and every major city had a pro-slavery mayor. The governor made a secret agreement with many states, and formed an alliance with Canada. Many northwest states joined and threatened to secede. Mr. Brown's double was able to stop war using the same tactics as Martin Luther King and Ghandi.

QUINN
Until now.

ARTURO
Of course, there were pro-slavery groups that wanted your double dead, Rembrandt. He is the only chance the United States has.

REMBRANDT
I've got to do this, then.

ARTURO
No, Rembrandt. That isn't an option.

REMBRANDT
No. If I can prevent war, I've gotta do it!

ARTURO
Delay, not prevent. You have to slide, remember.

REMBRANDT
Yeah...

WADE
And you have to remember the risks, Remmy. We can't afford to have you shot too.

MAGGIE
Yeah, Rem. We kinda like you.

Rembrandt smiled, but was going to go. He had decided that hours ago. He would have to sort out the other problems when the time to slide came.

At night, he left. On TV, he found out the headquarters of his double's party. He was going to help as much as he could. He reached the headquarters, and knocked on the door.

MAN
What do you want?

REMBRANDT
Hello, my name is Rembrandt Brown. I would like to help.

MAN
Funny, man. You may look like him, but you're not him. Now leave, before I call the police.

REMBRANDT
Give me a chance, man.

The man didn't know why, but he trusted Rembrandt. He was too closely similar to the Reverend.

MAN
Come on in.

Rembrandt entered the room, and he saw a bunch of men, many crying.
They were mourning the death of someone.

REMBRANDT
Did he die?

MAN
We're not letting anyone know, but yes. We're trying to hold them off until his successor is ready.

The man pointed across the room to a short, middle-aged man.

MAN
That's James Carver. He will replace Reverend Brown. He's not ready, though. It couldn't have come at a worse time. This country's going to suffer a civil war. And who knows how far it could go? Nuclear? Worse?

Rembrandt never thought of that. Sure, the Civil War on his Earth was bloody and many died. But what amount of damage could a 21st Century Civil War inflict?

MAN
I know that there couldn't be a good time for the Reverend to die, but if that man would've waited a couple more weeks! We were that close!

Rembrandt looked at Carver in the corner. He was shaking, knowing that the fate of the US might rest on his shoulders. But then, Rembrandt had a light go off in his head. That was the solution.

REMBRANDT
Look, man. What I'm about to tell you may sound crazy, but you have to believe me. I am from an alternate Earth. I am Rembrandt Brown, and I'd like to help.

MAN
What? Get the Hell out of here! Don't give me that!

REMBRANDT
Look, I'm serious. I know it sounds crazy, but you have to believe me.

MAN
No! I can-

The man stopped, staring at Rembrandt's neck.

MAN
The Reverend had the exact same scar there, at the base of the neck. It was very small, barely visible, but he was ashamed of it anyway. There's no way that anyone could've seen that. You're either Rembrandt Brown, or you've really done your homework.

REMBRANDT
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

MAN
What do you want to do?

REMBRANDT
I could "fill in" for the Reverend until Mr. Carver's ready.

The man seemed to stop in his footsteps. Was this the answer to his prayers? Was this the way he could stop the war? It seemed too good to be true, but he had to go along with it.

MAN
Great. My name is Dennis Gray. You're my new best friend.

Dennis didn't quite know what to believe, but this was a ray of light. The press had been bothering them for answers on the Reverend's condition. Now they had an answer. Even if he wasn't Rembrandt, he was a temporary solution. The men began to work.

Arturo and Quinn woke up and discovered that Rembrandt was gone.

ARTURO
He must have done it against our wishes.

QUINN
He doesn't act like this now, does he? Running around, interfering in his doubles' lives?

Quinn was still a little unsure of all the sliders. A lot could've happened while he was trapped inside Mallory.

QUINN
You didn't have him run for mayor, did you?

ARTURO
Are you ever going to forgive me for that, my boy?

QUINN
If you had won, it would've been a different story.

Quinn smiled. He was glad to be back in the group. He turned on the television, and he was amazed at what he saw.

TV ANCHOR
It appears that Mr. Brown's injuries weren't as severe as once thought. He was at a press conference earlier today.

REMBRANDT (from press conference)
Yes. I have returned, and I will continue to preach, despite the threats thrown at me. I will not allow slavery to return to this state or this country.

TV ANCHOR
Brown has three scheduled "sermons" this week, and four for next.

QUINN
What is he doing?

Arturo didn't know, but he knew what Rembrandt was thinking.

ANCHOR
In other news, a California poll has come out. Only 54 percent of Californians are in favor of secession. So, while the nation might be facing Civil War, the state of California might endure a miniature one. Jack?

Rembrandt was on the road. He was traveling all over Northern California, giving his sermons. His advisors were giving him everything he needed to say, but every once and a while, Remmy would add something from his heart. It was a lot of fun for him. He continued his tradition of crying, still the "Cryin' Man". Even Dennis was changing his mind. Maybe Rembrandt's story had merit to it, but it was so hard to accept.

The bus stopped in San José, and Rembrandt stepped out. He remembered doing a gig in San José before. It wasn't one of his most successful, but then again, his fans now were a lot more supportive than his fans now. He stepped to the podium and began his speech.

WADE
I don't understand! We can't even see him?

Wade and Maggie had come over to Arturo and Quinn's room. They all were angered by Remmy's decision, but they accepted it. They had tried to contact Rembrandt, but they hadn't allowed it. They couldn't allow it, because of the death of the original Rembrandt.

MAGGIE
How is he going to know when to slide? I'm sure that he isn't keeping a good track of the time.

QUINN
Remmy will be ready if they let him leave.

WADE
You think that they'll hold him here?

ARTURO
People will do drastic things to avoid war and protect their homes and families.

WADE
Well, I can't sit around and do nothing.

QUINN
Me either.

MAGGIE
Yeah, I'm with you. Why don't we check out the headquarters. We have to find some way to get to Remmy.

ARTURO
Excellent idea, Ms. Beckett. I will remain here and see what I can pull up on the Internet.

Rembrandt was standing at a podium.

REMBRANDT
Ladies and Gentleman...

Rembrandt began to cry, and for the first time on this trip, his tears were genuine. This world was changing him.

REMBRANDT
Slavery will not survive in our country. The Constitution will not allow it. Now, you'll are thinking that the power will change, but I'm here to tell you that it will not. The good people of California will get through this period and will come out stronger than ever.

The crowd began to cheer. Rembrandt was proud to be the Reverend Rembrandt Brown, now. For the first time in weeks, he forgot about home.

Outside the hotel, Quinn was looking at the timer. He answered the question he knew they would ask.

QUINN
A week and a half.

Wade and Maggie looked worried.

QUINN
Don't worry about Remmy. He'll find his place here, and then he'll come back. I promise.

Quinn and the girls walked down the street. The streets were covered in propaganda from both sides. The anti-slavery pamphlets were brightly colored, while the pro-slavery papers were in simply black and white.

The Sliders continued to walk down the street towards the headquarters. They saw an angry mob surrounding it.

QUINN
A pretty determined 54%.

WADE
I'm worried. What if they get to Remmy?

Arturo was also worried. In the room, he was watching the television, he noticed a growing hatred toward Rembrandt. Militia groups that fixated on killing Rembrandt and reinitiating slavery were growing. And there was nothing any of the them could do about it.

Rembrandt entered the bus, tired from the heat. Dennis congratulated him.

DENNIS
Great job! You were great out there. You reminded me of the Reverend back when he was in his prime.

REMBRANDT
Thanks. I feel great out there.

Rembrandt was happy, but began to miss his friends.

REMBRANDT
Dennis?

DENNIS
Yeah, Rev.

REMBRANDT
Can I call my friends?

DENNIS
I wouldn't advise it.

REMBRANDT
If they call, could you take the call?

DENNIS
I'll see what I can do...

Dennis didn't mean what he said. He wanted to protect Remmy and his country. Anything that could have endangered either he wouldn't allow. He had family down in Los Angeles. If Civil War broke out in America, it would most likely break out internally. And if the war turned nuclear, there was no escaping.

Quinn and the girls reached the mob. There were signs everywhere, all pro-slavery. But what made the Sliders cringe was the evidence of hostility towards Rembrandt. Pamphlets claiming "Second Time's the Charm" with pictures of the dying Rembrandt in the middle made Quinn want to throw up. He kept it away from the girls as long as he could, but these signs were everywhere.

A man approached Quinn.

MAN
So, you're here to help restore the Aryan race to its rightful place? That's great! We'll show those sons of-

Quinn fought the urge to punch this man in the face. What good would it do?

QUINN
Let's go. We're obviously not going to get in.

On the ride home, Dennis gave Remmy good news.

DENNIS
Hey, Rembrandt!

REMBRANDT
Yeah?

DENNIS
We're heading back to San Francisco. You'll be home pretty soon.

This was good news. Rembrandt was getting tired of life on the road. His thoughts, once again, turned to home.

They reached the headquarters, and Rembrandt retreated to his room. When he opened the door, the light didn't turn on. He tried to mess with them, but was hit over the head. Two large men dragged him from the room.

Arturo woke and went to the living room of their hotel room. He looked at the timer. One week and no word from Rembrandt. He was beginning to get nervous. He turned on the television, which the group found themselves doing a lot to find out about Rembrandt's progress. He was alarmed at the news.

ANCHOR
This just in. Reverend Rembrandt Brown has been kidnapped. A source from inside the Brown headquarters has informed Channel 7 that Brown was kidnapped late last night after he returned from a sermon in San José. We'll keep you updated on the progress as we get it.

Arturo didn't want to wake Quinn, but tried to keep calm. Rembrandt's double had been killed by these people, and now they had Rembrandt. They were treading on thin ice on this world. He knew that everything would turn out all right. It always did. But the thought of his own separation from the group kept popping up.

Rembrandt woke up tied to a chair.

MAN #1
Wake up, sleepyhead!

Rembrandt was drugged, so that he could barely talk.

MAN #1
Look, boys. The "rev" can barely talk. He's finally at a loss for words. You better stay that way. We're fixing this state, and nobody's getting in our way.

MAN #2
Yeah. You better do what you're told or you're really going to need those tears.

An hour later, Rembrandt woke up completely. The men were sitting in the corner of the room, talking.

REMBRANDT
What do you want from me?

MAN #1
We want you to shut up about resisting slavery. We want you to preach that slavery should be allowed.

REMBRANDT
The people won't believe that I agree with slavery all of a sudden. Why would anyone believe that I would agree to put my people back into chains?

MAN #2
We believe that the people will believe what you tell them to believe.

The man checked his sentence, making sure that's what he wanted to say.

REMBRANDT
What if I say no?

MAN #2
Then, this time, you're not going to wake up, Mr. Brown.

Rembrandt was nervous. He would have to make a serious decision soon. This was a big test of his strength and character.

REMBRANDT
Okay, guys. I'm going to schedule a sermon for a week. Then, I will preach your ideas.

MAN #1
You had better, or it will be the last sermon you will ever give.

The men weren't worried. If this guy didn't pan out, there was always Plan B.

Rembrandt had a plan. He would have to delay the sermon, and they would have to prep Mr. Carver fast.

The men dropped Rembrandt back off at the headquarters. Dennis met him there.

DENNIS
Rembrandt! What happened?

REMBRANDT
They want me to preach their ideals.

DENNIS
Well, you're not going to do that!

REMBRANDT
They threatened to kill me. Get Carver ready. We have a week.

Remmy hadn't made a decision yet, but this plan gave him time. He had to think.

During the week, Rembrandt spent most of his time in his room, thinking. Should he risk his life or betray his beliefs? The decision was so hard. What happened in the next week would determine the fate of this world. Never before had he held this kind of power. Instead of feeling happy about it, though, he felt nauseous. Dennis had told him of the consequences. He knew them all too well.

Dennis was preparing Carver. He had many sessions when he would give fake sermons. Carver's problem was his stage fright and his confidence. He had the charisma to be a public speaker, but he lacked the ability. Throughout the week, he worked on those problems.

DENNIS
Remmy?

REMBRANDT
Yeah...

DENNIS
Carver should be ready. He's moving a lot faster that we thought he would.

REMBRANDT
That's good to hear...

DENNIS
Are you all right, Reverend?

REMBRANDT
I have a lot on my mind. If you'll excuse me...

Rembrandt entered his room. He hadn't talked to his friends in over two weeks. His big sermon was the next day. Then, it came to him, and not a minute too soon. He put it into effect.

In the hotel room, the sliders were getting restless. Maggie and Wade had moved in with the guys so that if Remmy called, they would know immediately.

WADE
What are we going to do?

ARTURO
Rembrandt has arranged a sermon for tomorrow, but we don't know how those kidnappers affected him. He could be killed tomorrow. For all we know, this could have happened to Rembrandt's double before.

Then, a ray of hope came to the Sliders. The phone rang. Quinn answered it. It was Remmy.

QUINN
Remmy! Good to hear from you! We have to slide tomorrow at 1:10.

REMBRANDT
I know, Q-Ball! Listen, I need you all to show up before the slide. I'll arrange it so that you can get in back. I may need a fast escape.

Quinn agreed and Rembrandt hung up. He had to make Dennis let his friends in. He said he needed a "fast escape". He didn't know who from, though.

He talked to Dennis.

REMBRANDT
I need you to let my friends in.

Rembrandt gave Dennis a piece of paper with a description of his friends.

DENNIS
I can't let anyone in!

REMBRANDT
You have to. I can't explain why, but my life is in danger.

DENNIS
Then, we'll boost security!

REMBRANDT
We can't! The men that kidnapped me have someone in here!

DENNIS
How do you know?

REMBRANDT
How else would the media find out?

DENNIS
How do we know it's not your friends?

REMBRANDT
It's not! Please make it happen, Dennis!

DENNIS
It will. Everything is going according to plan.

The next day, the park where Remmy would give his sermon was ready. Rembrandt looked at his watch. It was 1:03. He stepped out in front of the audience, and it began to cheer. Rembrandt, once again, gave real tears. He came to a final decision as he reached the podium.

REMBRANDT
My friends...

The Sliders showed up, and Dennis allowed them to enter. Quinn looked at the timer. They had six minutes until the slide.

REMBRANDT
The world you live in isn't like the one I knew. In that world, slavery is long gone, and white and black people live together. They aren't completely equal, but its getting closer. Your world can do the same.

Rembrandt looked out on the crowd. He saw the men, and he even saw the gun they were planning to use. Rembrandt tried to stay calm.

REMBRANDT
I was going to come here and tell you the same thing that I've told every time. But I need to tell you something different today. I have to go away, for good.

The crowd began to ask why.

REMBRANDT
I know you don't want me to go, but I need to. But its going to be okay. There is a man that I have trained that will take my place. Follow his ideas, much like you have followed mine, and you will avoid war.

The men began to get nervous, as the assassin loaded his gun. Rembrandt was counting inside his head, getting ready to run.

REMBRANDT
There's one last thing to say. I was kidnapped earlier this week, and they tried to convince me to go against what I believe. They threatened my life. Here is my last idea. My last sermon. Hold your ground and you will succeed. No matter how much they threaten you, hold your ground. Everything will work out.

The assassin looked moved by Rembrandt's words. He lowered the gun, but a man took the gun from the sharpshooter. The time it took to get the gun ready, gave time for Dennis to grab the gun he brought. He fired, killing the man.

The crowd went into a frenzy. Chaos was hitting the crowd. Had the Reverend been killed? Was this the end? Or was it the beginning?

Rembrandt spoke into the microphone, and the crowd began to calm down. Quinn and the rest of the Sliders were amazed at the power Remmy held over these people.

DENNIS
Continue, Reverend.

REMBRANDT
Here he is, Mr. James Carver. He will lead you. He's a good man. A strong man. And he will make this world like my world.

Carver approached the podium.

Rembrandt walked behind the podium to his friends. It was time to go.

QUINN
Are you ready, "Reverend"?

Rembrandt looked at Quinn, smiling. He had done good on this world. He was happy with what he had accomplished.

Quinn opened the vortex, and the Sliders jumped inside.

CARVER
I, James Carver, promise to delay war as long as I can.

Carver looked into the crowd. He found the man he was looking for and he winked at him. Plan B was ready to commence.
