 5.18 | Mutants Among Us

This episode ranks up there with Slider120's greats, in my opinion. I never fully appreciated his outstanding work until I read this episode. I do, however, have some questions about it.

"As the vortex opens in an alley, resembling early 17th century buildings..."

>>> This sets up an interesting setting for our sliders: An Earth where the alleys look like buildings, and early 17th century buildings at that!

"Some British officers enter, as they pass Laura, heading to the bar, asking for drinks, and bring up the fact that they just chased some reject mutants out of the forest, bus missed them, when they tried shooting at them."

>>> I'm assuming this is an earth where the British rule America... and they fashioned their alleys after early 17th century buildings. If it wasn't for the alley, I might have thought the sliders had been here before.

"Laura headed down to a river and decided to stand on the bridge, but gets surprised when Jacob comes towards her 'what are you doing here?'"

>>> I live here!

"well of coarse, I'll inject her with some medication, then she'll need to have lots of rest, she should be fine in a couple day."

>>> Nice use of alternate terminology! This is the first episode I have seen where the English language took another turn in its evolution. It's about time we saw one of those. Exactly how long is a "couple day?"

"Later on, back at the Inn, Ryan tucks her in, and as he leaves the room, Laura begins changing color into reddish pink, and blue lines begin to appear in her arms, and face."

>>> Within a time span of thirty seconds, she was completely plaid. It was then that Ryan realized Laura was slowly turning into a kilt.

"Laura, who is now mutated, leaps towards the window, but as Jacob tries to pull her back, she claws at him, then leaps out the window, running out of town."

>>> Finally an episode where one of the sliders makes it home! Laura is from out of town, isn't she? Or was it Canada?

"I'm fine, its just that my shirt will have to get replaced soon"

>>> Are you planning to pay off the shirt arc this season?

"Its an egg, but not any kind of egg."

>>> Quit teasin' us! What is it?

"When someone carries it with them, the rock injects itself into a host,"

>>> Not your ordinary case of kidney stones... YEEOW!!!

"'can you contact New York to find out if they have a cure?' Rick asks"

>>> Dr. Ford picks up the phone and dials a number. "Hello, New York?..."

"we can catch her, before she leaves out of town"

>>> You mean they knew they could go home all this time?!

"Laura begins collasping her stomach, when she fully mutates into a different being. Then a man comes over to her, and pulling her into a pool for a sexual experience."

>>> Dr. Ford: "I TOLD them not to feed her after midnight!" Seriously, I have some questions about this. First, why would a man want to have sex with a mutant? Second, why does he feel the need to do it in a pool? And third, was this consentual?

"In a small house outside of town, the sliders, along with Dr. Ford, wait as a woman opens her door 'Dr. Ford, can I help you?'
'Dr. Harris these people just had their friend become a mutant, I need you help'

>>> Dr. Harris: "You want fries with that?"

"we don't know where she is, she could be miles away"

>>> That's a lie! Just a minute ago they knew she was out of town!

"no, I've been to this cave, a short distance from here, but one problem is, is that the british troops are out to kill them as well"

>>> I love how you are keeping with the alternate history here. Far too often this aspect of a story is forgotten.

"When Dr. Harris and Ryan were exiting the cave, they ran, until several soldiers stopped them 'what are you doing out here?!'"

>>> "I LIVE here!"

"Dr. Harris had given us a strange story for the rock to be from outerspace, but it seems over in Washington D.C. they had made a nuclear chemical to create electricity, and Dr. Harris said, the chemical spilled out into nearby lakes and rivers"

>>> Different worlds, different physics! But the nuclear chemical theory doesn't explain the formation of these "weird rocks".

"Laura gets up from the bed and hugs him 'thanks for being here' Jacob breaks loose and kisses her, then as he leaves the room, Laura opens the window, feeling the warm air blow into the room."

>>> Hey, great ending! I love that you left an open-end to the mutation storyline. Not many people will pick up on the warm air thing, but I did right away. How do you plan to bring a cure to the next world?

In any case, I found this story to be wildly entertaining. I got a real kick out of it. Your subtle use of alternate history was much better than the overt attempt displayed in "California Reich" earlier this season. There were just a few holes, but I'm sure the answers lie in the scenes that were cut for time and story considerations. I look forward to the resolution of the shirt that needs to replace itself and the mutant arc. Do I smell a Wade return in this? You left that open for possibilities, and I'm dying to find out what happened to her. In any case, keep up the good work, Slider120, and keep putting out stuff like this! :-D

And the moral of the story, boys and girls...

"I guess the next time I find a weird rock, I should leave it alone"
