Gate Haven - Hall of Obscurity - Assorted Tidbits - Questions of Spelling

Based on posts by Kyrie Daniels, zyzzybalubah, TemporalFlux and Recall317.

 Wade Welles vs. Wade Wells

First off, let me definitively state that there is only one right answer here: it's WELLES. Co-creator Tracy Tormé specifically chose the name as an homage to filmmaker Orson Welles (and not author H.G. Wells, who'll have to settle for a pair of comprehension-defying third season episodes as tributes.) However, the enduring popularity of "Wade Wells" on the internet is understandable when you consider what the average viewer actually saw:

WELLES

• Every mention of her name in every script

• The press releases for "Season's Greedings"
WELLS

• The onscreen announcement that Wade has won the lottery in "Luck of the Draw"

• The Pilot novelization

• All the Sliders comic books

• Most non-"Season's Greedings" press material

Nevertheless, Tormé insists that all the instances of "Wells" were mistakes... and the lottery broadcast's spelling can be written off as a guess on the Lottery Commission's part, since they apparently only had Wade's pronunciation of her name to go by. (And in fact, while barely visible onscreen, the credit card she receives later in the episode has her name spelled correctly.)

 Maximilian Arturo vs. Maximillian Arturo

The issue of how many Ls to include in Max Arturo's name is a bit trickier:

MAXIMILIAN

• The scripts for all episodes in Seasons One and Two, except "Summer of Love"

• Arturo's Earth Prime driver's license in "Summer of Love"

• The statue plaque and TV caption in "Post Traumatic Slide Syndrome"
MAXIMILLIAN

• The scripts for all episodes in Season Three and later, as well as "Summer of Love"

• The Mirage Hotel poster in "Eggheads"

• The campaign ads in "The Weaker Sex"

• All the Sliders comic books

While the evidence is conflicted, I lean towards the spelling with one L. Behind the scenes, it seems to have been the original writers' preferred spelling - the use of two Ls in "Summer of Love" can be dismissed as a typo - and onscreen, it's especially hard to imagine that the professor's driver's license or his "egomaniac" double's commemorative plaque could get away with being misspelled. (Of course, the latter clue only applies to how the Wrong Arturo spelled his name.) However, it's not that big a deal... both spellings show up in fairly equal measure in the scripts, on the show, and on the web. Pick the one you like.

Ross J. Kelley vs. Ross J. Kelly

This one is thankfully clearcut: the right answer is KELLEY. There's only one exception, and it's a typo outside of the show's continuity:

KELLEY

• The scripts for both the Pilot and "Into the Mystic"

• The onscreen text in the "I'll fight for you" ad watched by Mrs. Mallory
KELLY

• The closing credits of the Pilot
